Herstory of the "I fight like a girl" t-shirt.

We decided to rewrite history...

Herstory celebrates girls and women.  Herstory denies the slur, "you fight [or do anything] like a girl."  Herstory says, "you're damn right I do!"

Not long ago, an Australian girl wrote a poem titled, "I fight like a girl."  You may have already read it, as it has been widely distributed throughout the Internet.  It is available as a poster from Sticker Sisters

Although it would be wonderful to credit the author, it also seems quite appropriate that she is anonymous.  The poem belongs to all of us, and whoever reads it, it is with her own voice.

"I fight like a girl," became a deliberately conscious declaration at Sun Dragon Women's Martial Arts in the year 2000.  It was around that time that we discovered the "I fight like a girl" poem, but certainly the concept was not new to us.  For over 15 years, our sensei has challenged so many students to see the value of fighting/punching/kicking/etc. "like a girl."  Somehow it all just came together, and we redesigned our dojo t-shirt to visualize our intention.  We'd like to acknowledge our anonymous friend for whatever role she played in our inspiration.

Osu!
